How a Red Apple Gala raffle led to a new fitness routine for this Park City couple

PARK CITY, Utah — When Michelle Parker bid on, won, and purchased a yearlong Smart Fit Method membership at the Park City Education Foundation’s Red Apple Gala last fall, she figured she and her husband, Jamie, might as well split it.

Six months later, she said she can’t imagine her mornings without it.

“My motive with Smart Fit is to be the strongest I can be, and also longevity,” Parker said. “In the six-month period, my fat has decreased, and my lean muscle mass has increased. Simply put, that makes me feel good.”

Parker, a Keller Williams Park City CEO, co-founder of SMMT and former University of Oregon track athlete, was already active when she walked through the door. She and Jamie hike and run with their dog, play tennis, golf and, most recently, padel. But what Smart Fit Method offered was something different: personalized, data-driven training that goes far beyond what a typical gym membership offers.

Metrics that matter

Smart Fit Method Park City combines strength training with tools like body composition scanning, VO2 max testing and red light therapy, all under one roof. Members receive a detailed metabolic assessment that tracks more than 46 physiological markers, from oxygen utilization and fat burn efficiency to parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system balance.

“If I can get more oxygen into my cells, everything is going to function better,” Mina Thain, Owner Operator of The Smart Fit Method Park City said. “You’re going to have more energy, more mental clarity. It’s going to have an impact on every aspect of your life, because you’re working properly from the cellular level on.”

Parker said the data keeps her accountable in a way that traditional workouts never did.

“I’m a data person, so every month when they do a new scan or longevity check, the numbers do not lie,” she said. “When you pull up the app and see the difference between January and March, and it shows you’re down a half an inch in your quads but your muscle is up, you’re leaning into the data.”

Body composition scans are conducted every four to six weeks, while more in-depth longevity testing, including VO2 max, is done every 90 days.

A program built around the data, not assumptions

Smart Fit Method’s training approach is informed by metabolic and body composition data specific to each member, which Thain said matters because fitness research and program design have historically skewed toward male physiology.

“A lot of programs that we’re slotting into were programs built for the male population,” Thain said. “With Smart Fit, because you’re testing your metabolic data and using your body scan, you can really tailor it in, whether you’ve never strength trained before or you’ve been strength training your whole life.”

One example: Smart Fit Method Park City offers four cold plunge pools, ranging from 42 to 60 degrees, after research suggested that water that is too cold can spike cortisol and adversely affect female hormones.

“You get the benefits of cold plunging without those adverse effects at the warmer temperature level,” Thain said.

A case study Thain cited, conducted at one of Smart Fit Method’s California locations, found that among 171 members with an average age of 57, female members saw an average body fat reduction of 3% over six months, compared with 2.5% in males. Female members also showed a 30% improvement in overall strength during that period.

For Parker and her husband, Jamie, the program has become part of their routine together. They go most mornings around 6 or 6:30 a.m., before their two kids wake up, and Parker said having both of them committed has made the habit stick.

“There are a lot of couples that go to Smart Fit, but I think if one person’s excited about it, the other person is driven and excited about it too,” she said.

VO2 max and longevity

Perhaps the most compelling metric Smart Fit Method tracks is VO2 max, which measures how efficiently the body uses oxygen during exercise. Thain said it is one of the strongest predictors of longevity, and that a VO2 max below 15 in women is generally associated with the loss of independent living.

“VO2 max is something we naturally lose as we age, basically 10% every decade after 30,” Thain said. “But just like muscle mass, it’s something we can train. The higher your VO2 max, the younger your biological age.”

Parker’s VO2 max score of 47 puts her biological age roughly 12 years younger than her chronological age, Thain said.

One stop: fitness, recovery, community

For Parker and her husband, the appeal is also logistical. The Smart Fit Method combines strength training, red light therapy, sauna, and cold plunge into a single visit that typically takes 45 to 60 minutes.

“You’re not a member at four different places,” Parker said. “You go in, do your workout, and then jump in the sauna or cold plunge while you’re there.”

Parker said the facility’s culture is just as important as its technology.

“When you walk in the door, you’re greeted, you’re in a welcome space,” she said. “Everyone is in this space focusing on really optimizing their health with a similar mindset. That’s a big component of what makes Smart Fit special.”

Parker has brought several friends along and said that her relationships with staff have made the experience feel personal.

“You walk in, and you’re chatting about your kids or your dog or your trip last week,” she said. “It just feels so real and comfortable.”

Smart Fit Method Park City is open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
