Driver airlifted after vehicle rolls off U.S. 189 in Provo Canyon

PROVO CANYON, Utah — A driver was airlifted to a trauma center Sunday evening after a vehicle rolled off U.S. 189 and down a steep embankment in Provo Canyon, prompting a multi-agency rescue response.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 7:28 p.m. on Aug. 2 after reports that a vehicle had left the highway and traveled down an embankment near the train tracks toward the Provo River, according to Wasatch Fire District.

When firefighters arrived, they found the driver trapped inside the vehicle, which had come to rest on three wheels. Crews first stabilized the vehicle using rescue struts before safely extricating the occupant.

The driver was then flown by Intermountain Life Flight to a trauma center. Officials have not released the patient’s condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
