Smart Fit Method started with a father, a son, and a diagnosis

PARK CITY, Utah — Rob Darnbrough spent his life on the red line. Competitive cyclist and serial entrepreneur, convinced that more was the answer to everything. For decades, he trained six to eight hours a day. As he got older, that became a daily 90-minute strength session, based on the belief that volume produced results.

It made him exceptionally fit. It also nearly killed him.

At 49, in what he figured was the best shape of his life, Rob ran a full diagnostic scan. It confirmed his fitness, but also found a thoracic aortic aneurysm.

Two cardiologists gave him the same direction. If he saw a hill, turn around. Don’t lift anything heavier than 30 pounds. Four months of sitting still cost him 15 pounds of muscle and pulled him into a deep depression. A biological age test put him at 54. He’d aged five years in a single season.

The whole thing raised a question neither Rob nor his oldest son, Connor, could let go. Rob had trained harder than almost anyone, and it had cost him his health. So how do you build fitness and health at the same time, instead of trading one for the other? They went looking for the answer together. What they found was a machine built by NASA to reverse the atrophy astronauts come home with. Rob trained on it in Hawaii, three sessions a week, 20 minutes each. Three months later, he retested. His VO2 max had climbed to an elite 45-year-old’s.

Six to eight hours a day, for decades, had never produced anything like it. But twenty minutes at a time did.

That broke every assumption they had about exercise, and it turned into the question that started the company.

What if we took this experience and used it to help other people?

The father-son team researched and pulled in every technology they could find and tested it. Hunting for the ones that delivered results without the wear. The method had to be the product. Equipment was the easy part, anyone could buy a machine. What mattered was the science that turned that equipment into results, and the data that proved those results for each person.

Smart Fit Method was founded in 2020 and opened its first studio a year later. Every member still starts the way Rob did, with a scan that reads muscle, bone, cardiovascular capacity, and biological age. That baseline sets the program, and the numbers get retested so progress is something you see instead of assume. Most gyms ask how you want to look. Smart Fit asks how you want to live. We focus on Lifespan Quality Training: the physical capacity to show up for your life now and decades from now.

The approach has held up outside the studio. In 2026, Arizona State University selected Smart Fit Method as the primary exercise and recovery program for its XPRIZE Healthspan study. The team has since advanced to the 2027 XPRIZE Healthspan Finals, one of the top 20 in the world out of more than 1,500 that entered. The press caught on too, from FOX to Forbes.

Smart Fit is not a gym. It is not a trend. It is a method built on science, refined by thousands of sessions, and validated by the leaders in aging research.
