Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office building renamed to honor deputies killed in the line of duty

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office building will be renamed later this week to honor two fallen deputies.

The building, which sits at 1361 South Highway 40 in Heber, will officially be dubbed the Hathcock-Wright Justice Center to remember Scott Hathcock and Blake Wright, who both died in the line of duty.

The public is invited to the renaming ceremony which will take place on Friday, July 7 at 11 a.m. outside of the current Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office building.

According to Utah’s Law Enforcement Memorial, Wright was killed in 1990 at age 38 while constructing a firebreak in the mountains above Midway.

“Deputy Wright and civilian county employee Ralph M. Broadhead, 64, were constructing a firebreak with a bulldozer when the fire overwhelmed them,” said Wright’s memorial page. “After radio contact was lost, searchers found their bodies near the bulldozer. Deputy Wright was married and the father of six children. He is buried in Heber City Cemetery.”

According to an article from Deseret News, in 2008 Hathcock collapsed during a routine traffic stop along U.S. 89 and was declared dead on the scene. He was 48.

Hathcock was a part of the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) for 23 years, and during that time he worked part-time for the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office. After his retirement from the UHP, Hathcock worked for the Wasatch County Sheriff’s office full-time as a sergeant until the time of his death.
