Heavy rain floods Poison Creek Trail, Swede Alley as monsoon storms continue

PARK CITY, Utah — Heavy rainfall Friday swelled Silver Creek (Poison Creek) and caused minor flooding along the Poison Creek Trail, including in the bike path underpass, as monsoonal moisture pushed a round of strong thunderstorms across the Wasatch Back.

Minor flooding was also reported on Swede Alley in Old Town.

Videos sent to TownLift by reader Mack Lewis show water pooling along the trail and running through the bike path underpass as rain fell Friday afternoon.

The small creek, which typically runs at a trickle through midsummer, rose quickly as storms dropped heavy rain over the area. No injuries or significant property damage were reported.

More storms are expected. The National Weather Service forecast for Park City calls for showers and possibly a thunderstorm Saturday with a high near 86 and an 80% chance of precipitation, followed by likely showers and thunderstorms after noon Sunday, with rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, and higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Forecasters say the monsoonal pattern will hold into next week, with chances of showers and thunderstorms in the forecast each day. The National Weather Service warns that monsoonal thunderstorms may produce isolated to scattered flash flooding across the Southwest into the Great Basin.
