Expect overnight lane reductions on SR-224 as BRT construction begins April 1

High Valley Transit will host an open house April 7 as work ramps up along the corridor from Kimball Junction to Deer Valley Drive.

PARK CITY, Utah — Construction on the SR-224 Bus Rapid Transit project is expected to begin Wednesday, April 1, with early work already underway along the corridor between Kimball Junction and Deer Valley Drive, according to High Valley Transit.

For the week of Monday, March 30, through Friday, April 3, SR-224 between Canyons Resort Drive and Bear Hollow Drive will be reduced to one lane in each direction nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to allow crews to temporarily remove center medians. High Valley Transit said the overnight schedule is intended to reduce daytime traffic impacts and keep the project on track.

Drivers should expect periodic lane shifts, shoulder closures, and changing traffic patterns during construction. High Valley Transit says two lanes in each direction will be maintained whenever possible.

The work is part of a multi-year transit overhaul on one of Summit County’s busiest corridors. Construction is expected to unfold in three phases through summer 2028, with winter shutdowns depending on the weather. TownLift previously reported that the broader 2026 construction season is expected to run from April through November across multiple segments of SR-224, with work continuing in 2027, followed by cleanup, landscaping, and final striping in 2028.

The BRT project is designed to improve travel between Kimball Junction and Old Town by creating a faster, more reliable alternative to driving along SR-224, which High Valley Transit describes as one of the region’s most congested routes.

Transit riders should also note that High Valley Transit has posted a temporary closure for the 6357 Hwy. 224/Olympic Parkway stop from April 1 through Aug. 1.

Residents with questions can learn more at a public open house hosted by High Valley Transit on Tuesday, April 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Richins Building Auditorium, 1885 W. Ute Blvd. Project details and updates are also available through High Valley Transit’s SR-224 BRT project page.
