SR-224 construction shifts lanes, closes trail segments

High Valley Transit map outlines detours for cyclists and pedestrians along Bobsled Express construction corridor

PARK CITY, Utah — Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians along State Route 224 should prepare for changing traffic patterns and trail detours as construction continues on High Valley Transit’s Bobsled Express bus rapid transit project.

High Valley Transit said travelers can expect periodic lane shifts and shoulder closures during construction. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction whenever possible.

The project is being completed in three phases through summer 2028, with construction expected to pause during the winter months, depending on weather.

Work planned during the 2026 construction season includes utility relocations, drainage improvements, roadway reconstruction and new transit stations. Construction is underway in several areas between Kimball Junction and Old Town, including near Olympic Parkway, Bear Hollow Drive, Silver Springs Road, Canyons Resort Drive and the Park Avenue-Deer Valley Drive intersection.

The Utah Department of Transportation’s Wasatch Back construction team advised drivers this week to expect delays near the SR-224 intersections with Bobsled Boulevard and Cutter Lane as crews upgrade traffic signals. Police officers are expected to help direct traffic during portions of the work.

Construction has also restricted several sections of the multiuse trail system along SR-224.

The McLeod Creek Trail on the east side of the highway is restricted between Silver Springs Drive and Cutter Lane. High Valley Transit directs trail users to cross to the Millennium Trail on the west side of SR-224 at Cutter Lane or use the underpass near Newpark Boulevard.

Another section of the McLeod Creek Trail is restricted from just north of Silver Springs Drive and Bear Hollow Drive to Canyons Resort Drive. The posted detour follows Bear Hollow Drive to Cooper Lane and the Frostwood Trail before reconnecting near Canyons Resort Drive.

The Millennium Trail on the west side of SR-224 is also restricted between Landmark Drive and Olympic Parkway. Farther south, the sidewalk on the west side of Park Avenue is restricted between Lame Dog Lane and Empire Avenue.

High Valley Transit said alternate routes will be marked. Trail users near Lame Dog Lane can cross south of the road or use a route near Homestake Road.

The restrictions are expected to shift as work progresses between April and November. High Valley Transit has published an interactive map showing current closures and detours and advises cyclists and pedestrians to follow signs around active construction areas.

The seven-mile Bobsled Express route will run between the Kimball Junction Transit Center and the Old Town Transit Center. Plans call for six stations, service every 10 to 15 minutes, and a combination of dedicated bus lanes and lanes shared with other traffic.

Service is expected to begin in 2028.
