COALVILLE, Utah — A mudslide at Echo State Park prompted officials to temporarily close beach camping at Dry Hollow Campground after a storm moved through the area Wednesday evening.
According to Echo State Park officials, the slide occurred as heavy rain fell on dry soil from a nearby farm area across the road from the campground. The runoff carried a mixture of mud, water, and loose vegetation downhill toward the reservoir.
Park officials said everyone is safe and that no injuries have been reported.
“Fortunately, our park infrastructure worked exactly as intended,” Echo State Park said in a social media update. “The majority of the flow directed into the culvert and out onto the beach as designed.”
As a precaution, the park closed beach camping at Dry Hollow Campground. Guests staying at Red Rock beach camping can still use their camping passes to access showers at Dry Hollow, according to park officials.
The slide followed a period of dry conditions, which can increase the risk of runoff and erosion when intense rainfall arrives quickly. Echo State Park explained that prolonged dry weather can leave exposed topsoil unable to absorb sudden heavy precipitation, causing water to flow across the surface and carry loose soil downhill.
Park officials encouraged visitors to watch for warning signs of slope movement, including muddy or discolored runoff, newly formed water channels, leaning vegetation or fence posts, cracks in hillsides, and unusual sounds from moving rocks or debris. Staying aware of surroundings can help visitors remain safe in the park.
The closure comes as summer storms continue to move through Utah, bringing periods of heavy rain that can create flash flood and debris flow risks, especially in areas affected by dry conditions.
Visitors planning to recreate at Echo State Park should check current conditions and follow any posted closures or safety guidance from park officials.
