UDOT says I-80 is ‘getting slammed’ this summer. Here’s what that means for Summit County drivers

The state’s summer construction season includes bridge replacement at Jeremy Ranch, paving through Parleys Canyon and ramp closures that could affect Park City-to-Salt Lake travel.

PARK CITY, Utah — Drivers between Park City and the Wasatch Front will see a busy construction season on Interstate 80, with the Utah Department of Transportation planning bridge replacements, paving, ramp closures, and other work along the corridor this summer.

The biggest Summit County project is at Jeremy Ranch, where UDOT will replace the eastbound and westbound I-80 bridges at the Jeremy Ranch interchange. UDOT says the work is intended to replace aging infrastructure and provide a smoother ride for drivers. Construction is expected to begin this spring and continue through late 2027.

UDOT plans to use accelerated bridge construction for the Jeremy Ranch work, building the new bridges next to the existing freeway before sliding them into place. The approach is meant to reduce long-term traffic impacts, but it will still require short-term closures. Drivers should expect lane closures on Homestead Road, traffic shifts, trucks entering and exiting the work zone, increased noise, dust, and vibration, intermittent trail closures, and up to two weekends of full I-80 closures at Jeremy Ranch. Exact closure dates have not yet been announced.

The Jeremy Ranch bridge work is part of a larger set of UDOT projects planned for I-80 and State Route 224 in Summit County and Parleys Canyon. UDOT says 12 projects over the next two years will replace 4 miles of pavement, improve or replace 8 bridges, improve 3 intersections, and construct a new bus rapid transit system on SR-224. For I-80 alone, UDOT lists 2026 projects at Jeremy Ranch, in Parleys Canyon, at the mouth of Parleys Canyon, from Mountain Dell to Lambs Canyon, and a fiber project from Lambs Canyon to U.S. 40.

UDOT’s broader 2026 construction announcement puts the I-80 work in Salt Lake and Summit counties at $73 million. The package includes repaving I-80 from Mountain Dell Reservoir to Lambs Canyon, repaving I-80 from 2300 East to the mouth of Parleys Canyon, replacing the two bridges near Jeremy Ranch, replacing three bridge decks, and rehabilitating four other minor bridge decks from roughly Foothill Drive to Mountain Dell Reservoir. UDOT says paving is expected to wrap up before the end of 2026, while bridge work will last into late 2027.

In Parleys Canyon, UDOT plans to replace seven bridges in Salt Lake County. The work includes bridge rehabilitation and deck replacements at locations including 2500 East, Foothill Drive, ramps over I-215, Rock Quarry interchange, Mount Aire interchange, and the Mount Dell Water Treatment Plant area. Construction is expected to begin in 2026 and continue through fall 2027.

UDOT also plans two paving projects on the Salt Lake County side of I-80. From 2300 East to Stillman Bridge at the mouth of Parleys Canyon, construction is expected to run from May through June 2026. From SR-65 near Mountain Dell to Lambs Canyon, construction is expected to begin in July and continue through fall 2026. Both projects are intended to provide a smoother ride and extend the life of the roadway.

West of Parleys, drivers should also expect major impacts at the I-80/I-215 interchange. As part of UDOT’s I-215 West project, crews are rehabilitating 30 bridges, repaving 25 miles of mainline I-215, and reconstructing or repaving 14 miles of ramps on I-80 and California Avenue. UDOT says ramps in the I-80/I-215 interchange will close at different times between April and August to allow work on 11 bridges in the area.

Current UDOT-listed impacts include the eastbound I-80 ramp to southbound I-215 closed through late May, and the westbound I-80 ramp to southbound I-215 closed through late June. During those closures, there is no access to the southbound I-215 from I-80. Other ramp and local street restrictions are scheduled throughout the summer, including closures affecting California Avenue and Redwood Road.

Farther west, UDOT’s SR-36 and I-80 project in Tooele County includes adding an auxiliary lane on eastbound I-80 from SR-36 to the SR-201 exit, along with widening and intersection work on SR-36. UDOT also listed short-term spring impacts on I-80 tied to drainage pipe installation under westbound I-80 and overhead sign installation near SR-201.

For Summit County drivers, the practical takeaway is that I-80 construction will not be confined to one location. The Jeremy Ranch bridge replacement is the most direct local project, but paving and bridge work through Parleys Canyon, plus ramp closures near I-215, could affect trips to Salt Lake City, the airport, and the west side of the valley throughout the summer.

UDOT says project schedules are subject to change due to weather, materials, and other construction factors. Drivers can sign up for project updates through UDOT’s project pages or check UDOT Traffic before traveling.
