Airport-bound drivers face I-215 ramp closures beginning Tuesday night

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Drivers heading to Salt Lake City International Airport should prepare for detours as the Utah Department of Transportation closes three northbound Interstate 215 off-ramps for bridge work.

The closures begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, according to UDOT.

The ramp from northbound I-215 to westbound Interstate 80, a primary route to the airport, will close for approximately 35 days. The ramp from northbound I-215 to eastbound I-80 will also close for approximately 35 days.

UDOT expects both I-80 ramps to reopen shortly before Labor Day. Airport-bound drivers should use Bangerter Highway, Interstate 15 or State Route 201 as alternate routes.

The northbound I-215 off-ramp to Redwood Road will remain closed through Oct. 2.

Another ramp at the interchange, from Redwood Road to northbound I-215, is already closed for bridge work and is expected to remain closed through July 2027.

“Taking care of our roads and bridges is one of UDOT’s most important responsibilities,” UDOT Project Manager John Montoya said. “Much like a car or a home, a bridge requires different kinds of maintenance throughout its life. Staying ahead of that maintenance helps keep our transportation system safe and reliable, and helps us get the most from the infrastructure Utahns have already invested in.”

The work is part of the I-215 West Improved project. UDOT said the project includes repaving multiple sections of I-215, replacing 18 bridge decks and repairing 12 additional bridges.

The project is expected to be completed in late summer 2027. Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.
