Wild Wasatch: Faults, glaciers, and deep time

The Wasatch Range wasn't built all at once. It was lifted by faults, carved by glaciers, and shaped by forces still at work today.

PARK CITY, Utah — Long before the Wasatch became synonymous with ski runs, trailheads, and the daily skyline of northern Utah, the range was being built by forces far older and slower than human memory.

The modern Wasatch began to rise roughly 12 to 17 million years ago, as the Earth’s crust stretched across what geologists call the Basin and Range province. That stretching created faults that lifted the mountains while the valleys to their west dropped — producing the steep, abrupt face that still defines the Wasatch Front today, according to the Utah Geological Survey.

But the story started much earlier. Some of the rocks exposed in the range formed in ancient seas hundreds of millions of years ago. Older mountain-building episodes during the Cretaceous Period shaped an earlier landscape that was largely eroded away before the modern range rose in its place.

What makes the Wasatch especially distinctive is that the system that built it is still active. The Wasatch fault zone runs roughly 220 miles along the western base of the mountains, from central Utah into southeastern Idaho.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the range was created over the last several million years by repeated earthquakes along that fault — not a single break, but a series of segments. It is one of the best-studied continental normal-fault zones on Earth, making the Wasatch not just visually prominent but scientifically significant.

Ice shaped the range, too.

Glaciers occupied parts of the Wasatch during the Pleistocene, carving the sharp alpine scenery still visible in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons.

Ancient Lake Bonneville filled many northern Utah valleys during the same era, leaving shorelines and sediments that still mark the landscape.

The Wasatch, then, is both ancient and ongoing — a range rooted in deep geologic time, raised by faulting, carved by glaciers, and still quietly changing. What feels permanent was built in motion.
