Park City PD shine a light on sunglass thieves

PARK CITY, Utah – On Monday, October 18, the Park City Police Department (PCPD) received a report of three suspects stealing merchandise from Sunglass Hut downtown.

The three suspects, pictured above, were caught on video stealing 15 pairs of sunglasses totaling $5,900.

According to Rob McKinney, PCPD’s Patrol Operations Lieutenant, the thieves may have used a diversion tactic during the theft.

“These folks, they know what they’re doing.” said Mckinney, “The suspects were actually using earpieces and a diversion tactic during the theft.”

“What most groups try to do is divide attention.” Officer McKinney said, further explaining common diversion tactics, “One of the (suspects) go gather the attention of the clerks or employees and ask different questions and monopolize their time, while the other ones work their way into areas where they think they’re not going to be observed by a camera and steal merchandise.”

“They work together, and the person that’s diverting doesn’t steal anything; they just spend all their time trying to keep the attention of the employees,” McKinney said.

PCPD is asking for help identifying the suspects, and anyone who recognizes them is urged to call Officer Carrillo at 435-731-0759 or email mcarrillo@parkcity.org.
