ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah — A hiker died Friday after falling from the Angels Landing trail in Zion National Park, according to the National Park Service.

Park officials confirmed Saturday that a body had been recovered from below the trail. The individual’s identity has not yet been released as authorities work to notify next of kin.
The West Rim Trail, including Scout Lookout and Angels Landing, was closed Friday afternoon following reports of the fall.
The trails reopened Saturday, though park officials have announced that Angels Landing will be closed for trail maintenance April 20-23. The day-before lottery for permits will reopen April 23 for hikes beginning April 24. The West Rim Trail remains open.
The final section of Angels Landing is accessible only by permit and follows a narrow ridge with steep drop-offs on either side, ranging from 500 to 1,000 feet. Chains are installed along the route to assist hikers.
Since 2000, there have been 13 confirmed deaths from falls at Angels Landing.
