Kimball Junction car crash leaves one dead; 208 lbs. of marijuana seized

PARK CITY, Utah — A crash at Kimball Junction Saturday morning led to a pedestrian death and an unexpected drug bust, according to new details reported on Monday.

On Saturday at roughly 9:11 am, a black BMW traveling northbound on SR-224 struck a Honda Crosstour at the intersection of Ute Blvd. in Kimball Junction, the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) said.

The BMW then stuck a male pedestrian that was panhandling and proceeded to crash into an oncoming white Hyundai Tucson that was traveling southbound.

The man struck, 56-year-old Chad Daines of Phoenix, was pronounced dead after being transported in critical condition.

The driver of the Hyundai fled the scene after the crash — it was later discovered that the vehicle was transporting 208 pounds of marijuana.

The driver, 58-year-old Darrell Gutierrez of Grand Prairie, Texas,  has since been arrested and booked into the Summit County Jail for the drugs after being seized by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
