Hideout claims Summit County wishes to quash the voice of its citizens

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah. — In a press release during the holiday weekend, the Town of Hideout said it “is shocked by Summit County’s repeated bullying, mischaracterization of the facts and attempt to subvert Hideout’s citizen’s rights. Summit County wishes to quash the voice of its citizens and not let their vote stand.”

Last Friday, Summit County asked Fourth District Judge Jennifer Brown to add language to her June 22nd verbal ruling that declared Hideout’s annexation attempt invalid. It was in response to the Hideout Town Council meeting on June 29 where they certified the annexation referendum results. The majority of Hideout citizens support the annexation of Richardson Flat in Summit County (roughly 350 acres)- the proposed plan would allow Hideout to develop commercial and residential space in the area. The decision reached by Judge Brown is subject to appeal.

The statement went on to accuse the County Attorney of a publicity stunt. “The County Attorney’s office is bringing a frivolous and meaningless motion in order to cause higher legal fees and end up wasting judicial resources. Summit County is trying to create controversy when there is none.”

Despite the contention, Hideout’s legal team has shown no intention of violating the current ruling.

The statement concludes with further accusation of dishonesty. “Summit County was only giving lip service when they said that they hoped to work with all municipalities “cooperatively toward regional planning solutions for the important growth and service issues facing our region.”

The next hearing in the case is set for July 16, 2021.
