Skyway gondola makes first laps with 30 days to go until Park City Mountain’s opening target

Video shows the 10-person cabins making test laps as Park City Mountain counts down to the 2026-27 season. The $29 parking program follows with the garage in early December.

PARK CITY, Utah — Seven months after the Cabriolet made its final run, its replacement is moving. The new Canyons Village Skyway gondola is cycling its enclosed cabins through the terminals, 30 days ahead of Park City Mountain’s Nov. 20 target opening.

While The Skyway is not yet open to the public it replaces the Cabriolet, the open-air lift that carried Canyons skiers from the parking lot to the base area for nearly three decades before making its final run on March 29. The new gondola carries up-to 10 people per enclosed cabin with floor-to-ceiling windows and adds a mid-station stop that gives mid-village homeowners and lodging guests direct access for the first time. Like the Cabriolet, the Skyway will be free to ride.

The gondola connects to the new five-level Canyons Village Parking Structure near S.R. 224 and the Frostwood Drive roundabout, which consolidates the former maze of surface lots into a single arrival point with more than 1,800 spaces. Both projects were targeted for completion before the 2026-27 season.

Paid parking arrives with the garage

The garage brings an end to the large free parking area at Canyons Village. Park City Mountain announced in April that the structure will charge $29 per day, matching the surface-lot rate at Mountain Village, where paid reservations have been required for years.

According to the resort’s parking and transportation page, the Canyons Village Parking Structure will offer:

  • A daily rate of $29
  • Free parking after 12 p.m.
  • Free carpool parking for vehicles with four or more occupants, subject to available space
  • A Winter Season Parking Pass option for garage access
  • Free parking for employees in designated spaces
  • Limited free, first-come, first-served day-skier parking will remain in the surface lot next to the garage.

What to expect on opening day

The resort says the Canyons Village Garage is scheduled to open in early December once the final phase of construction wraps up. Until then, parking will be free in surface lots 2, 3 and 4, with signs and attendants directing guests and shuttle or walking routes connecting the lots to the upper village.

Mountain Village will run its usual reservation system this winter. All Mountain Village lots are free from Nov. 20 through Dec. 4 but still require an advance reservation. Paid reservation parking at $29 begins Dec. 5 and runs through April 3, with free carpool parking for vehicles with four or more occupants and free, no-reservation parking after 12 p.m. in all lots. The Mountain Village garage is $50 with a reservation.

The resort says the Canyons plan is modeled on the Mountain Village program and is meant to improve arrival flow, cut congestion in surrounding neighborhoods and push more skiers toward carpooling and transit.

A season with plenty to watch

Beyond the new gondola, Park City Mountain is heading into a winter that could bring a snowier season, Shaun White’s Snow League making its Park City debut in January, and continued questions about ownership as Oasis Management’s proxy fight with Vail Resorts plays out.

Last year’s planned Nov. 21 opening slipped to Dec. 5 for lack of snow, and the resort notes the Nov. 20 target remains subject to weather and conditions.
