Police Log: Deputies investigate fatal boating accident, mail theft, and assault on High Mountain Road

A fatal boating accident at Echo Reservoir, a reported assault on High Mountain Road, and a mail theft arrest were among the incidents handled by Summit County deputies and Park City police this week.

Monday, Aug. 24

Incident: Traffic hazard
A tree fell and was blocking about three-quarters of the roadway on Holiday Ranch Loop Road.

Incident: Suspicious activity
A caller reported a large drone flying over the two lakes in Deer Valley.

Incident: Traffic problem
A driver reported waiting through four cycles of the traffic lights at Park Avenue and Deer Valley Drive without receiving a left-turn arrow.

Incident: Wildlife problem
A female moose was reported lying down and panting heavily on Prospector Avenue as a large crowd gathered around it.

Incident: Traffic hazard
Construction road-closed signs near Snow Creek Drive and Park Avenue had been moved or knocked over. The signs were put back in place.

Tuesday, Aug. 25

Incident: Non-injury accident
Two vehicles were involved in an accident on Kearns Boulevard. No medical attention was needed, and neither vehicle was blocking the roadway.

Incident: Child safety
A caller reported a 6- to 10-month-old child sitting in the front seat of a large SUV and playing on the dashboard while traveling westbound on U.S. 40.

Incident: Non-injury accident
A caller reported being rear-ended near Chase Bank on Kearns Boulevard. The other driver reportedly left the scene, and the caller followed the vehicle toward Main Street.

Incident: Traffic hazard
A chair was reported in the middle of the right lane of SR 248, close to a traffic light.

Wednesday, Aug. 26

Incident: DUI
A vehicle was reported driving erratically near Ledger Way and East Richardson, nearly hitting 10 vehicles and driving on the shoulder.

Incident: Traffic complaint
A caller reported one lane blocked on Kearns Boulevard, with two exit lanes creating traffic problems, and requested that an officer or construction crew place cones in the area.

Incident: Animal problem
Two loose dogs were reported running unleashed throughout Park Meadows.

Incident: Brush fire
A brush fire was reported near Park City Mountain after a lightning strike. Crews continued to fire the fire into Thursday, August 27.

Incident: Search and rescue
Search and Rescue was paged to assist with recovering a victim from the Henrys Fork Trail.

Incident: Drugs
Deputies located a suspicious vehicle at the Kimball Chevron fuel pumps and contacted the female driver, who was the sole occupant. Deputies discovered she was on adult probation and parole, and a search of the vehicle turned up methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. She was arrested and booked into jail.

Thursday, Aug. 27

Incident: Parking problem
A caller reported an SUV camping in a cul-de-sac in a no-parking area. The occupants were reportedly sitting in the vehicle smoking, and the caller was concerned about cigarette butts.

Incident: Disturbing the peace
A caller reported loud music coming from a house on Woodside Avenue. The caller could hear the music but could not see how many people were at the residence.

Friday, Aug. 28

Incident: Citizen dispute
A person reportedly punched a vehicle on Main Street after the driver was traveling about 20 mph.

Incident: Hit and run
A vehicle reportedly hit a parked truck at China Bridge and attempted to leave the scene. The truck sustained significant damage.

Incident: Mail theft
Deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle near Deer Hill Drive and contacted a woman who said she was a package delivery driver. Deputies found an empty shipping box she had thrown from her vehicle and later located undelivered packages in another vehicle. The woman was arrested for mail theft.

Incident: Assault
Three men reportedly attacked a man and woman on High Mountain Road after a verbal altercation escalated to physical violence. The man sustained significant facial injuries, while the woman had minor redness on her face. The suspects, described as two white men and one Polynesian man, remain outstanding.

Incident: DUI
A traffic stop for lane-travel violations resulted in the driver being arrested for DUI after performing poorly on field sobriety tests. An open alcohol container was also found inside the vehicle during an inventory.

Saturday, Aug. 29

Incident: Business assist
A man who had been kicked out of The Cabin earlier because of a fight reportedly refused to leave.

Incident: Disturbing the peace
A caller reported a loud party on the upper portion of Norfolk Avenue.

Incident: Traffic stop
A driver was stopped for traveling 59 mph in a 40 mph zone and driving through a solid red light near Park Avenue and Homestake Road.

Incident: Traffic stop
A driver was stopped for traveling 62 mph in a 45 mph zone on SR 224 near Meadows Drive.

Incident: Fight in progress
A fight was reported at the soccer fields on Kearns Boulevard.

Incident: Animal/traffic complaint
A pickup truck was reported doing donuts in a parking lot on Deer Valley Drive.

Incident: DUI
A traffic stop for lane-travel violations resulted in the driver being arrested for DUI. An open alcohol container was found inside the vehicle.

Sunday, Aug. 30

Incident: Alcohol offense
Two people with open alcohol containers on the sidewalk near The Cabin were advised that having open containers in the area was illegal. Both complied and threw away their drinks.

Incident: Drowning
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a person recreating at Echo Reservoir who reported finding an overturned fishing boat that was sinking, with four people in the water. One person was pronounced dead at the boat ramp after lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

Incident: DUI
Deputies responded to a single-vehicle accident involving one man. Signs of impairment were observed, and the driver was cited for DUI and released to medical staff.
