Park City hosts Utah Mammoth Sled Hockey athletes’ national tournament

PARK CITY, Utah — The Utah Mammoth Sled Hockey team hosted a tournament partially in Park City over the weekend, welcoming teams from Chicago, Detroit, Albuquerque, Seattle and Phoenix.

The Utah team was established in 2024 by Park City’s Dave Nicholls, who remains on the roster, with a mission to give athletes with physical disabilities the opportunity to compete in sled hockey.

“Since our founding, we have helped dozens of players develop their skills, build confidence, and grow both on and off the ice. Through dedicated coaching, teamwork, and a welcoming community, we continue to inspire athletes of all ages and abilities while expanding access to adaptive hockey throughout Utah,” the organization said.

Nicholls is also a pioneering para bobsled athlete.

Games were held at the Park City Ice Arena, the Black Rock Event Center just outside Park City and the Mammoth Ice Center in Sandy.

The Park City Ice Arena’s proximity to the National Ability Center has helped provide access for athletes with disabilities to participate in sled hockey in Park City for decades.

At the 2026 Paralympics, sled hockey athletes took the world stage, including during a record-setting U.S. game against Italy.

The Utah Mammoth Sled Hockey coed team welcomes players of different ages, abilities, and skill levels, focusing on teamwork, confidence, and athletic development while helping grow adaptive hockey throughout Utah.

Although the Utah Sled Hockey Association is not owned or operated by the Utah Mammoth organization, it is licensed to use certain Utah Mammoth logos for events such as the weekend tournament.
