Millcreek Fire burns at mouth of Parleys Canyon, crews battle steep terrain

MILLCREEK, Utah — A fast-moving wildfire burning near the mouth of Parleys Canyon has prompted traffic restrictions near the Interstate 80 and Interstate 215 interchange.

UDOT closed the ramp from eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 and warned drivers to expect heavy delays and use alternate routes..

The Millcreek Fire ignited near Tanner Park on the Salt Lake County side of Parleys Canyon and quickly grew in steep, dry terrain above I-80.

Multiple fire agencies responded alongside helicopters and air tankers, which were seen making repeated water and retardant drops over the fire Monday afternoon. According to Utah Fire Info, the rugged terrain has made access difficult for firefighters on the ground.

As of Monday evening, the fire is estimated at 40 acres. Officials had not reported any evacuations or structure losses, but structure protection is being setup off of Canyon Rim lane.

The Millcreek Fire is the latest reminder of the heightened wildfire danger across northern Utah following months of hot, dry conditions. Changing winds could continue carrying smoke into the Wasatch Back, potentially affecting air quality in Park City, Summit County, and Heber Valley.

Residents traveling to or from the Salt Lake Valley should be prepared for possible delays through Parleys Canyon and monitor conditions before heading west.

Officials are asking the public to stay clear of firefighting operations and avoid stopping along I-80 to view the fire.
