Ride Share bike rentals stations had most successful July 4th weekend in program’s history

PARK CITY, Utah — Summit County’s Bike Share program recorded its highest ridership ever over the Fourth of July weekend, including more than 400 rides on Independence Day alone to the Main Street area and City Park for the parade and celebration.

Carl Miller, transportation manager for Summit County, oversees the Bike Share program. Official numbers were still being reported as of publication, but early figures indicated a strong weekend.

“We had over 1,000 rides over the five-day weekend between July 2 and July 6,” Miller told TownLift.

Bike Share has operated in Summit County and Park City since 2017. In 2023, the county took over operations, including transactions and marketing — the latter of which is getting much of the credit for the program’s recent gains. The holiday falling on a Saturday and mild, dry weather also contributed to the higher ridership.

The county is working closely with hotels to spread the word that renting a bike is an efficient, affordable and — maybe most of all — fun way to get around town.

This year’s fleet is lighter and easier to maneuver than earlier models.

Employees Alec Bonham of Coalville and Ryan McWhirter of Hoytsville were servicing the Park City stations Tuesday morning. By the time they were interviewed at 9 a.m., they had already hit at least 20 of the 25 stations.

Both said the weekend helped locals and visitors alike get to and from their destinations, calling it “a win, win, win” for riders, the city, and the county.
