SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — Summit County drivers heading to the airport or commuting along the Wasatch Front should plan for extended delays as the Utah Department of Transportation continues major construction on the I-215 West corridor.
Construction began Sunday, April 26, on two key ramps at the Interstate 80 and Interstate 215 interchange. The closures include the ramp from southbound I-215 to westbound I-80 and the ramp from eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215.
The impacts are expected to be significant for those traveling to Salt Lake City International Airport.
UDOT has outlined alternate routes. Drivers approaching from the north are advised to continue south on I-215 to State Route 201, then head west to Bangerter Highway and travel north to the airport. Those on eastbound I-80 will be detoured to southbound I-15 before connecting to westbound SR-201 and back to southbound I-215.
Several additional ramp closures are already in place around the interchange:
- Southbound I-215 on- and off-ramps at California Avenue are closed until mid-May
- Redwood Road access to southbound I-215 is closed through early June
- Redwood Road access to northbound I-215 is closed until July 2027
The closures are part of UDOT’s I-215 West Improved project, a large-scale effort that includes replacing 18 bridge decks, repairing 12 others, and repaving approximately 25 miles of roadway.
Drivers should expect ongoing disruptions through the spring and summer. UDOT says every ramp within the I-80/I-215 interchange will close at some point for bridge work, though closures will be staggered to limit full shutdowns. Most ramp closures are expected to last between 20 and 40 days.
Construction schedules may shift due to weather or other factors. UDOT encourages travelers to check conditions before heading out using its traffic app or website.
Officials recommend allowing extra travel time as construction continues across one of the region’s busiest freeway connections.
