UDOT says avoid or delay travel on Parleys

UPDATE 2:50 p.m. UDOT says I-80 ROAD CONDITIONS, Mouth to East Canyon: heavy snow, East Canyon to Kimball: snow, Silver Creek: light snow. Vehicles have been struggling. Avoid or delay travel on Parleys.

WASATCH BACK, Utah — As long awaited snow storms blow through the state Tuesday going into Wednesday, the Utah Department of Transportation is encouraging residents to exercise caution on Wasatch Back roads.

Parley’s Canyon, US-40 from SR-32 to Silver Creek, and SR-224 from Marsac to Empire Pass all have traction law requirements in place.

Winter driving tips from Utah Highway Patrol

1. Slow down.
Snow, ice and wet pavement reduce traction. Drive well below the speed limit when conditions are slick.

2. Increase your following distance.
Give yourself extra space between vehicles — stopping distances are much longer on snow and ice.

3. Avoid sudden movements.
Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly. Quick actions can cause skidding.

4. Watch for black ice.
Bridges, overpasses and shaded areas freeze first and may look wet when they’re actually icy.

5. Clear your entire vehicle.
Remove snow and ice from windows, mirrors, headlights, taillights and the roof before driving.

6. Don’t rely on 4WD or AWD to stop faster.
Four-wheel or all-wheel drive helps you get moving — it does not improve braking on icy roads.

7. Be patient around snowplows.
Stay back and avoid passing unless absolutely necessary. The safest road is often behind the plow.

8. Know how to handle a skid.
Ease off the accelerator and gently steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go.

9. Always wear your seat belt.
Winter conditions increase crash risk — buckle up every trip.

10. Carry an emergency kit.
Include blankets, warm clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables and basic supplies.

11. Keep your gas tank at least half full.
This helps prevent fuel line freeze-up and ensures heat if you’re stranded.

12. Allow extra travel time.
Leave earlier than usual and expect delays during storms.

13. Stay home if conditions are severe.
If travel isn’t necessary, the safest choice may be to wait it out.
