SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — For residents hoping to save on utility bills, several free and low-cost tools are available to help reduce monthly costs and improve home efficiency.
From self-guided assessments to hands-on equipment rentals, Summit County Health called out key resources that can help homeowners and renters identify where energy is being wasted and how to fix it.
For customers of Rocky Mountain Power, the company offers its Wattsmart self-guided home assessment, an online tool designed to help customers evaluate their home’s energy use and identify opportunities for savings. Similarly, Enbridge Gas customers can use the ThermWise Home Energy Plan, which highlights potential efficiency upgrades and available rebates. Both programs are designed to help residents better understand their utility usage and access financial incentives for improvements.
Another option is the ENERGY STAR Home Energy Yardstick, a free national benchmarking tool from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Yardstick compares a home’s energy use to similar homes across the country, offering a score and personalized recommendations to improve efficiency and cost savings.
For residents who want a more hands-on approach, Summit County libraries offer Energy Detective kits available for checkout. The kits include tools such as a thermal camera to detect heat loss, a watt meter to measure appliance energy use, and a smart plug to monitor electricity consumption. Borrowers can also take home a conservation kit stocked with simple items designed to reduce energy waste immediately.
Local officials encourage residents to take advantage of these resources, noting that even small efficiency upgrades can add up to meaningful savings over time.
For more information on accessing these tools, residents can visit their utility provider’s website or contact their local Summit County library branch.
