SR 224 wildlife fatality photo garners national attention

PARK CITY, Utah — A Park City photographer’s stark portrayal of wildlife conservation challenges has earned her top honors from a leading nature photography organization.

Shauna Hart received the Judge’s Choice Award in the Conservation category from the North American Nature Photography Association for her image “The One Who Cares,” which highlights the impact of vehicle collisions on wildlife.

“This award isn’t just about my photography; it’s about giving a voice to the voiceless and sparking change,” Hart said. “Wildlife crossings are a proven solution to save human and animal lives, and it’s time we prioritize their construction.”

The recognition comes as Utah grapples with wildlife-vehicle collisions. According to the Utah Department of Transportation, these accidents result in millions of dollars in damages annually.

Hart’s work supports Save People Save Wildlife, a nonprofit advocating for wildlife crossing construction throughout Utah.

“Shauna’s dedication and talent are a beacon for conservation efforts,” said Erin Ferguson, Save People Save Wildlife board member. “This award brings much-needed national attention to a local problem that affects communities across North America. With increased awareness and funding, we can build more wildlife crossings and make our roads safer for everyone.”

The award is part of NANPA’s annual Showcase Awards for 2025.
