Hit-and-run ski accident leaves Park City Mountain instructor with season-ending injuries

PARK CITY, Utah — A tragic hit-and-run accident at the Canyons side of Park City Mountain (PCM) on Wednesday, February 28, has left local resident and beloved snowboard instructor Martin Drayton with multiple spine fractures, sidelining him for the remainder of the winter season.

The accident took place around 1:15 p.m. at the intersection of the runs Mainline and Alleycat. Several eyewitnesses provided descriptions of the suspect as a “tallish woman in a white one-piece with pink sides” sparking a community-wide search for the individual responsible.

“That’s one thing that’s been apparent to me is, so many people have been in touch with me, and have said that the same thing has happened to them, or something similar to a friend, and the person didn’t stop,” Drayton said.  “It’s as if people are just either unaware of the safety rules that apply to the mountain or just ignore them.”

Drayton’s diagnosis includes a compression fracture of the thoracic spine and T8 vertebra, marking the end of his winter season. Drayton is also a flight attendant, and these injuries will ground him from flying duties for four to six weeks. The pain is causing severe discomfort and Drayton will be needing to a see a spinal specialist.

“It’ll be up to them to decide on the severity of the compressions, but right now, I’m still getting headaches. My back pain is enough that it wakes me up in the early hours every day,” Drayton said. “I just can’t be comfortable. I’m not comfortable sitting, standing, or lying for any length of time.”

According to his peers, Drayton is not just any local; he’s a multifaceted individual whose life is a testament to his diverse talents and contributions. As a revered snowboard instructor at PCM, a Delta flight attendant, a talented voiceover artist, and a world record holder in slalom skateboarding, Drayton embodies the spirit of adventure and kindness.

The looming bills, and inability work has been on the forefront of Drayton’s mind on top the normal day to day expenses.  However, an anonymous person recently set up a GoFundMe page for Drayton, which surprised, and humbled him.

“There are so many more needy and worthy people out there than us,” Drayton said. “The outpouring of support, love and affection that we have received since this happened has been deeply touching and makes us feel so glad that we live in this wonderful town. We couldn’t be more grateful.”

Those interested in donating can visit Drayton’s GoFundMe Page. Drayton and his family are also looking for accountability from the skier responsible, and for any individuals to come forward who may have more information regarding the accident.
