Deadline to file to run for office Jan. 8

The filing period typically takes place in March

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The deadline to file to run for office in Summit County during the 2024 election cycle is fast approaching.

While the filing period is typically in March, the deadline to file has been moved this year to Jan. 8 at 5 p.m due to a new state law.

On the county ballot this cycle, residents will choose who will fill three Summit County Council seats, as well as the roles of assessor, recorder and treasurer, all four-year terms.

A new county sheriff will also be elected to a two-year term to fill the vacancy left by former Sheriff Justin Martinez, who was confirmed as the new U.S. Marshal of Utah in June.

Three seats on the Park City, North Summit and South Summit School Boards, respectively, will also be up for grabs, all for four-year terms.

The early filing period isn’t the only change to the election cycle this year. Due to updates to Utah State Code, the deadline for many Utahns to change their party affiliation for the 2024 primary election has been moved to Jan. 9.
