DNR: Important updates to big game hunting regulations

UTAH — Utah’s fall season begins on Saturday, August 19, with the highly anticipated general-season buck deer archery hunt and the general spike and any-bull elk archery hunts.

In addition, the introduction of a split for the general-season any-bull elk hunt gives hunters two unique opportunities to participate. The early-season hunt is scheduled for October 7–13, followed by the late-season hunt on October 14–20. As the season progresses, the general-season buck deer hunt (with any legal weapon) awaits from October 21–29, while the general-season muzzleloader elk hunt takes place from November 1–9.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources would like to remind hunters of important updates that have been made to big game hunting regulations this year. Get the scoop on the changes below:

Trail cameras: The Utah Legislature has revised the rules concerning trail cameras in Utah, effective since May 3. From July 31 until December 31, trail cameras on public land are strictly prohibited, except for a few specified exceptions. However, you’re allowed to continue using a trail camera that stores data internally and doesn’t transmit live data on private land as long as it’s for legal hunting purposes.

Mandatory harvest reporting for antlerless hunts: A new rule has been implemented, mandating hunters to report their harvests in Utah’s antlerless big game hunts. After the hunting season ends, hunters have 30 days to report their harvest online or over the phone. Failing to complete the mandatory report will result in exclusion from the antlerless drawing competition the following year. Please note that late reporting will incur a $50 fine, allowing you to regain eligibility for the antlerless drawing.

Game retrieval and meat salvage requirements: In line with the new regulations, hunters are now required to physically check the area where they shot an animal before leaving. If an animal is harvested, hunters must collect the meat from specific areas: above the knee for the front quarters, above the hocks for the hindquarters, and along the backbone, including the loins and tenderloins, between the neck and hindquarters.

Paunsaugunt Unit changes for elk hunting: The Utah Wildlife Board recently approved a change for elk hunting in the Paunsaugunt Unit. Previously a limited-entry elk hunting unit, it has now transitioned into a any bull elk unit. However, please note that archery hunting has been removed from the “any bull” seasons. Hunters may still participate in any-legal weapon and muzzleloader hunting season dates with a valid any bull permit, but archery dates are no longer accessible.

Weapons technology changes: The Utah Wildlife Board has approved additional regulation modifications, specifically regarding weapons technologies. Notable changes include the prohibition of attached electronics on most weapons, with the exception of illuminated reticules.
