Trailer carrying apples catches fire on I-84 in Morgan County

MORGAN COUNTY, Utah — No injuries were reported after the trailer of a semi truck carrying apples went up in flames Saturday on I-84 east.

According to a statement from the Mountain Green Fire Protection District, the tire of the truck’s trailer caught fire near Taggart’s Grill in Morgan, but the driver did not notice other drivers trying to flag him down until he passed Croyden. By that point, the truck’s trailer box was ablaze.

“The cargo of apples quickly was consumed, and units from Morgan Fire&EMS, Mountain Green Engine 131 and a North Summit Engine and Water Tender were required for extinguishment,” said a statement from the Mountain Green Fire Protection District. “The fire did not extend to the grass, which would have compounded the incident as the hillside is very steep would have caused significant fire development.”

The freeway was closed for approximately an hour as crews worked to extinguish the fire.
