Over 80% of Utah’s population have access to community parks
UTAH— According to a report from USAFacts.org, 39% of Americans are fortunate enough to live within a mere half mile of a park, with 82.8% of Utah’s population having easy park access.
Park access varies significantly across different regions in the United States. Southern states, such as Mississippi, West Virginia, and South Carolina, have the lowest park accessibility, with approximately 30% of residents living within a half mile of a park.
On the other hand, five states, namely Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, and Minnesota boast impressive statistics, with over 90% of residents having the privilege of living within walking distance of a park.
However, park access disparities go beyond geographical locations and exist among different racial and ethnic groups. Urban neighborhoods that are densely populated and lack adequate resources tend to be deprived of local parks and open spaces.
Access to parks is proven to encourage physical activity within the surrounding community. With parks conveniently located within walking distance and well-supported by infrastructure like sidewalks and crosswalks, individuals have the opportunity to meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended level of physical activity.
Engaging in regular physical activity has numerous benefits, including improved mental health, reduced risk of disease, and strengthened bones and muscles.
