Matt’s Canyon Fire now fully contained

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — A 6-acre fire broke out west of the Coalville, Echo Reservoir area near I-80 on Friday, July 21 at approximately 6 p.m.

According to a statement from Summit County, it is believed that the fire, dubbed the Matt’s Canyon Fire, originated from a lightning strike earlier last week. No structures were threatened, and no evacuations were called out.

A federal helicopter, Summit County Wildland Fire, the North Summit Fire Service District, a federal helicopter, and Summit County Public works responded to the scene.

As of Friday, July 21 at approximately 10 p.m. the fire was at an estimated 5-6 acres, and was 60% contained.

As of Saturday, July 22 at noon, the Matt’s Canyon Fire was 100% contained.

The North Summit and South Summit Fire Districts and Summit County Wildland Fire are monitoring the area. The fire’s final size was 1.8 acres.
