Avalanche triggered by snowboarder in Dutch Draw

PARK CITY, Utah — The Summit County Search and Rescue team was activated yesterday for a soft slab avalanche near Dutch Draw.

According to an observation report from the Utah Avalanche Center, the avalanche was an estimated 12 inches deep, 175 feet wide, and 600 feet in vertical length.

“DPS helicopter flew over the avalanche area and utilized detection technology to ensure no one was buried,” said a shift report from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. “SAR personnel confirmed no one was buried in the avalanche and that a snowboarder was responsible for triggering the avalanche.”

Utah Avalanche Center provides a daily avalanche forecast and a Know Before You Go program to keep those recreating in the outdoors safe and aware with education.
