Summit County Library hosts slew of book clubs for all ages

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah – Do you enjoy reading? Are you interested in interacting with local community members? Summit County Library has a club for that. Children and adults alike can join the Utah library network’s monthly and bi-monthly themed book clubs. The list of clubs offered caters to 4th graders to the over-21 crowd, from history to film lovers.  

If You Give a Kid a Book Club alternates locations between Kimball Junction and Kamas for monthly meetings. The club is for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders and a ‘grown-up’ of choice. The club will meet on September 8 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Kimball Junction Branch to discuss Grace Lin’s Newbery Honor-winning novel, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. In celebration of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. Advance registration is required. Register here

The Sips n’ Stories Book Club is a book club for adults aged 21 and older. Participants met on Thursday over Zoom for a drink and a discussion on Cristina Henríquez’s book, The Book of Unknown Americans. The next meeting will be on September 1 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. over Zoom to discuss Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed’s book, When Stars Are Scattered. Advance registration is required. The Kamas Book Club hosted their monthly book discussion on Monday on Miriam Murcutt and Richard Starks’s book, In a Town Called Paradox. On September 12, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., participants will meet to discuss Code Girls by Liza Mundy in the South Summit Services Building Conference Room. 

The Book to Film Club is hosting a free Salt in My Soul screening on Thursday, August 11, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Kimball Junction Branch auditorium. After the film, there will be an optional meeting on the book and the movie. There are numerous upcoming meetings for the Book to Film Club at the Kimball Junction Branch auditorium, including: 

  • The Man Who Knew Infinity (September 8 at 6:00 p.m.) 
  • Death on the Nile (October 13 at 6:00 p.m.) 
  • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Zoom meeting – November 10 at 6:00 p.m.) 
  • Penguin Bloom (Zoom meeting – December 8 at 6:00 p.m.) 
  • Anxious People (Zoom meeting – January 12 at 6:00 p.m.) 
  • Our Souls at Night (Zoom meeting – February 9 at 6:00 p.m.) 

Coalville Book Club will host its monthly book discussion on August 17 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Coalville Branch Library. This month’s discussion will be on Jess Walter’s The Cold Millions

On Thursday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m., Jess Walter will speak to the community and sign books in the Jim Santy Auditorium at the Park City Library. There will be books available for purchase after the presentation. The History Book Club is also reading The Cold Millions. Instead of meeting for a typical discussion, the History Book Club participants should plan to attend the Jess Walter Author Visit at the Park City Library. 

The Kimball Junction Branch Manager, Shaylee Phelps, explains that several book clubs, including the Kamas Book Club, the Coalville Book Club, and the Book to Film Club, have been running for many years with regular attendance. 

“They’ve had great turnouts and are pretty successful,” Phelps said.
