Tiny but tough, American pikas are key indicators of climate change in Utah’s mountains. Some populations are declining or have winked out due to warmer summers and reduced snowpack, while others are proving more resilient. Dr. Johanna “Pika Jo” Varner has been tracking these furry alpine creatures in the La Sal Mountains since 2018, studying what helps them survive in this isolated habitat. Her research could shape how we protect pikas, especially in Utah’s unique desert “sky islands.”
This event is designed for adults.
