US-189 to close near Charleston Monday for blasting work

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — Drivers traveling on U.S. Highway 189 near Charleston should plan for a temporary closure Monday as crews continue work on a highway-widening project along Deer Creek Reservoir.
The Utah Department of Transportation will fully close US-189 between Rainbow Bay and the State Route 113 intersection from 10 to 10:50 a.m. on NOv. 9 for blasting work.
The closure is part of UDOT’s project to widen US-189 between Wallsburg and Charleston, adding a second travel lane in each direction along the last section in the area with only one lane in each direction.
Crews are removing rock from the eastern hillside to make room for the widened roadway. The project also includes improvements to the SR-113 intersection, access and parking at Island Beach, sight lines through a curved section of highway, and wildlife fencing.
Drivers will need to use an alternate route during Monday’s closure and should plan ahead for the brief interruption.
Construction is expected to continue into 2028.
