Plan ahead: US-189 in Provo Canyon to shut down Sunday for repairs

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — Drivers traveling through Provo Canyon should plan ahead this weekend as a temporary closure is scheduled along U.S. Highway 189 for roadwork.

The Utah Department of Transportation will close U.S. 189 between the Wallsburg turnoff and the State Route 113 intersection in Charleston on Sunday, April 19, from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The 14-hour closure will allow crews to complete asphalt replacement and repair work on the temporary bypass lanes near Island Beach. Officials say the work is aimed at improving ride quality, enhancing safety, and extending the lifespan of the roadway while construction continues in the area.

During the closure, drivers will need to use alternate routes, as no through traffic will be permitted along that stretch of the highway.

Motorists are encouraged to plan for delays and check real-time traffic conditions before traveling. Updates are available through the Utah Department of Transportation’s traffic website.

The work comes as part of ongoing construction efforts in Provo Canyon, where temporary alignments and bypass lanes have been in place to maintain traffic flow during larger infrastructure improvements.
