Serve Park City expands 9/11 Day of Service to 44 community projects

PARK CITY, Utah — Serve Park City will host its third annual 9/11 National Day of Service on Saturday, September 19.

The annual day of service has grown from 35 to 44 projects since last year. Organizers are hoping for 1,200 volunteers to help with the service projects, 40 of which are organized by local nonprofits.

“We encourage all work groups, friend groups, book clubs, businesses, and families to pick a project and come serve,” Serve Park City organizer Karen Marriott said. “It’s a chance to meet your neighbors, support local causes, and give back to the community where we live, work and play. It promises to be a fun and memorable day.”

The day will begin with a free breakfast for volunteers at 8 a.m. followed by a short program honoring the victims and heroes of September 11, 2001, with a message on service delivered by one of the community’s first responders. The program will also include a presentation from the Sheriff’s Posse, bagpipes, Taps, and a “Last Call” ceremony performed by the Park City Police Department.

Service projects will begin at 9 a.m., ranging in size and scope. More physical projects include graffiti-removal project hosted by Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History and fence building with Habitat for Humanity. For those seeking less rigorous projects, letter writing, sorting eye glasses, quilting, and other opportunities are available on behalf of several nonprofits at the Blair Education Center at the Park City Hospital.

Serve Park City says they are still seeking assistance from local construction, painting, and landscaping companies to partner for some of the projects.

All 44 projects are listed on the Serve Park City website, and this year they are color-coded to indicate ones that are child-friendly and those that require physical labor.

After projects wrap up for the morning, volunteers will gather back in City Park for pizza donated by Park City’s Domino’s and cookies donated by Auntie Em’s.

Individuals and groups can learn more and register for projects at JustServe.org/ServeParkCity.
