Park City welcomes K9 Bruno home after surgery, outpouring of community support

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Police K9 Bruno was released from a Salt Lake City veterinary hospital Thursday afternoon and is recovering at home after a successful surgery, two days after he was seriously injured jumping from a freeway overpass while assisting with a suspicious package investigation.

Video shared by the Park City Police Department shows Bruno walking out of MedVet Animal Hospital alongside his handler, with casts on both front legs.

“Bruno’s surgery went well and he is officially on the mend,” the department said in a media release. “After everything Bruno has been through over the past few days, we are grateful he can begin the next part of his recovery at home, surrounded by the people who know and love him best.”

Bruno sustained two broken legs and a fractured jaw Tuesday after jumping from an overpass at the U.S. 40 and Interstate 80 interchange, where he and his handler were assisting the Utah Highway Patrol with a suspicious item that was later determined to be an e-bike battery. He was flown by Life Flight to Salt Lake City and underwent surgery Wednesday to repair his broken leg.

The department thanked the community for its support and extended special thanks to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Park City Fire District, South Salt Lake Police, Intermountain Life Flight and MedVet Animal Hospital.

“Bruno still has a long road ahead, but we are very happy to see him home and on his way to recovery,” the department said.
