Park City police K9 Bruno in stable condition, set for surgery after breaking two legs and jaw

"Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Bruno continues to show us just how tough he is," the department said in a media release. "We know he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but we are encouraged by his condition and the care he is receiving."

PARK CITY, Utah — Park City Police K9 Bruno is in stable condition and scheduled for surgery Wednesday afternoon after sustaining two broken legs and a fractured jaw when he jumped from a freeway overpass Tuesday while assisting with a suspicious package investigation, according to the Park City Police Department.

Bruno is being closely monitored by a medical team in Salt Lake City, where he was flown by Life Flight following the incident at the U.S. 40 and Interstate 80 interchange. The department said he is in good spirits and will undergo surgery to repair his broken leg.

“Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Bruno continues to show us just how tough he is,” the department said in a media release. “We know he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but we are encouraged by his condition and the care he is receiving.”

Bruno and his handler had responded Tuesday to assist the Utah Highway Patrol with a suspicious item near the interchange, which temporarily closed the ramp from northbound U.S. 40 to westbound I-80. The item was determined to be an e-bike battery, and all closures were lifted.

The department thanked the community and fellow first responders for the outpouring of support Bruno and his handler have received.

“Please continue to keep K-9 Bruno and his handler in your thoughts and prayers as he heads into surgery,” the department said, adding that another update will come once Bruno is out of surgery.
