SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for its 2026 Citizens Academy, giving community members a chance to take an inside look at how the office operates and serves Summit County.
Applications are available online at SCSO Citizens Academy Application. A paper application is also available upon request by emailing stalbot@summitcountyutah.gov.
The academy is scheduled to meet every Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m., beginning Aug. 11 and continuing through Oct. 13, with one Saturday session on Oct. 11.
Enrollment is limited, and the office said it receives more qualified applicants each year than it can accommodate. Prospective participants are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible to allow time for review.

Attendance is a key factor in the selection process. Successful completion of the program requires participants to attend at least 85% of scheduled sessions, which means they may miss no more than two classes. Applicants are asked to apply only if they can make every reasonable effort to attend all sessions.
“Our goal is to ensure that each available seat is filled by someone who can fully participate and benefit from the program,” the office said, “allowing us to maximize its value to both the participants and our community.”
As part of the application process, the Sheriff’s Office conducts a criminal history background check. A prior conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant, as each application is reviewed individually.
By submitting an application, applicants acknowledge they have reviewed the schedule, understand the attendance expectations and will make every reasonable effort to attend all sessions.
