Summit County bans open fires as Utah tightens wildfire restrictions statewide

Stage 2 restrictions prohibit campfires, charcoal grills, pellet grills and other ash-producing fuels on unincorporated and state lands

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — Summit County moved to Stage 2 fire restrictions Friday, part of a broader tightening of fire rules across Utah as hot, dry, and windy conditions continue to drive wildfire danger across the state.

The restrictions apply to all unincorporated and state lands in Summit County. Unlike Stage 1 restrictions, which allowed fires in some developed campgrounds and picnic areas, Stage 2 restrictions prohibit all open fires.

Summit County said Friday that there should be “no open fires of any kind” on state and unincorporated lands.

Utah State Parks also lists Stage 2 restrictions as prohibiting open fires of any kind, including fires in established fire pits, charcoal grills, pellet grills, or any other ash-producing fuel. Properly shielded gas or liquid-fueled portable camp stoves with shut-off valves are allowed if used in an area with at least 3 feet of clearance from flammable vegetation, according to Utah State Parks.

All other restrictions from Stage 1 remain in effect. Those restrictions include limits on smoking, fireworks, tracer ammunition, exploding targets, cutting and welding in dry vegetation, and operating internal combustion engines without working spark arrestors.

The restrictions come as fire danger has escalated across Utah. The Associated Press reported Friday that Gov. Spencer Cox declared a state of emergency and restricted fireworks ahead of the July Fourth holiday as the Cottonwood Fire in southern Utah grew to nearly 111 square miles and remained uncontained. The AP also reported that the National Weather Service issued a rare “Particularly Dangerous Situation” warning for parts of Utah because of high winds, low humidity, and rapid fire-growth potential.

The Bureau of Land Management also expanded Stage 1 fire restrictions on BLM-managed lands in northern Utah beginning June 19, including in Summit County, Salt Lake County, Wasatch County, Morgan County, Rich County, Utah County, and several other northern Utah counties.
