Bridal Veil Falls incident leaves two injured by falling ice

UTAH COUNTY, Utah — A visit to the scenic Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon turned dangerous Monday when large chunks of ice broke free from the falls, injuring two people — one seriously.
The Utah County Sheriff’s Office and North Fork Fire Department responded to the scene, where they found the victims struck by falling ice. First responders provided immediate medical care, focusing on stabilizing a man with severe injuries. He was later airlifted by helicopter to a nearby trauma center for further treatment.
The second individual sustained minor injuries and was treated on-site.
Officials say the falling ice came directly from the frozen waterfall, a common hazard during seasonal thaws. As temperatures rise across northern Utah, authorities are urging visitors to stay cautious when exploring areas with lingering ice and snow, especially at higher elevations.
“Even though the weather is warming up, the ice isn’t melting as fast as you’d think,” the sheriff’s office warned. “We’re asking people to stay clear of ice flows to avoid accidents like this.”
Bridal Veil Falls remains a popular destination year-round, but officials emphasize that early spring conditions — where melting ice becomes unstable — can be especially dangerous for hikers and sightseers.
Officials said the incident serves as a reminder to stay alert and keep a safe distance from icy cliffs and waterfalls until conditions improve.
