Outdoor adventure meets charity at the Dirtbag Derby, June 1
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Dirtbag Derby, a single-day climbing competition, will take place on June 1 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. This event is more than just a competition; it aims to embody the “free-spirited dirtbag lifestyle,” emphasizing climbing skills, creativity, and teamwork.
Held in various climbing sectors, including Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon, among others, the competition is held in teams of two. It follows strict climbing guidelines, requiring all routes to be redpointed and only allowing outdoor climbs to count towards the score.
In addition to the climbing challenges, participants can earn extra points through eco-friendly and community-oriented activities such as trash cleanup and carpooling.
This event is a fundraiser for the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance, with all proceeds supporting climbing activities in the Wasatch. The scoring system is based on the difficulty of the climbs completed, with points ranging from 50 for easier climbs to 250 for the most challenging routes.
Scorecards will be emailed to those interested in participating or supporting the event on the morning of the event and must be submitted by 7 p.m. that day. Final results and awards will be announced at the annual fundraiser on June 6th at Black Diamond Headquarters.
