PARK CITY, Utah — Calvin Marsh will go from a Miner to a Mariner when the Park City High School senior attends college in the fall at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on its sailing team.
At the academy’s campus in New York, for which the mascot’s name is the Mariners, he’ll study a double major in Marine Transportation and Naval Architecture.
Marsh is the first athlete from the Park City Sailing Association (PCSA), which is based at the Jordanelle Reservoir, to go on to compete on the collegiate level.

“We could not be more proud of him,” said a social media post from the PCSA. “His career moving forward in the sport is bright, and we’re so thrilled he found his home at PCSA.”
Marsh is a founding member and three-year captain of the PCHS Sailing Team as well as serving as the PCSA ILCA Travel Race Team Captain, all the while he was named the 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 ILCA Top Men’s Sailor.
Marsh also took part in four international-level regattas, and earned two district championship victories.
“Calvin didn’t get here on his own,” Marsh’s mom, Casey, wrote on social media. “We’re grateful for all the help and support that came from Park city Sailing and it’s members over the years.” She and his dad, Joel have been highly-involved volunteers in every level Park City Sailing.
The Marsh family enjoys longer-range, longer-term international sailing adventures when Calvin isn’t rock climbing, furniture making, fixing up vintage cars, or joining the Park City High School’s foreign exchange program in France.
I've lived in Park City for 30 years but right off the starting line, my journalism professors expressed plaudits after class for writing more so about the small-town sports in the surrounding mountains than the urban updates they assigned. Therefore, I’m on par punning and penning Parkites' pastimes. Turning high and early through my career, I’ve worked communications for The Olympics, the Paralympics and the Special Olympics. Additionally, there's been National Geographic, Patagonia, NCAA, USA Nordic and the United States Library of Congress, so I guess you could say this ain't my first rodeo.
