Mark Black History Month with a reminder of the relevance of history: ‘The Past is Never Dead’

PARK CITY, Utah – Join Dr. Danielle McGuire for a thought-provoking event celebrating Black History Month at the Black Box Theater at the Eccles Center in Park City on Feb. 29 at 7 p.m.

American history has never been more popular or contested. From bestselling books and blockbuster movies to podcasts and travel, the appetite for historical content is soaring. At the same time, we also witness a troubling trend of historical censorship, as 44 U.S. states, including Utah, attempt to restrict what we can teach and learn about American history.

The importance of understanding history

In light of these challenges, Park City Institute is proud to present a captivating event that promises to shed light on the importance of preserving and understanding history. Celebrate Black History Month with Dr. Danielle McGuire, a renowned author and historian known for her groundbreaking work on the civil rights movement. McGuire will delve into an American story everyone thinks they know – Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. However, her unique perspective will illuminate how we perceive and teach history, influence our understanding of the present, and shape our shared future.

Is American education going in the right direction?

This event, titled “The Past is Never Dead: Why History Matters Now More than Ever,” is a three-pronged celebration. It highlights the transformative powers of educators, the importance of storytelling for social impact, and the imperative to tell the story of domestic and sexual violence to end the cycle of abuse. “The Past is Never Dead” promises an engaging and thought-provoking evening. This event will resonate with history enthusiasts, educators, and anyone concerned about the direction of American education. McGuire’s expertise and commitment to uncovering untold stories from the civil rights movement make her the ideal speaker for this occasion.
