Utah reports highest COVID-19 case count since January
SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) reported 3,303 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest mark since Jan. 5. 442 Utahns are currently hospitalized with the disease.
The United States set a new record this week, with over 265,000 cases per day on average. Deaths nationally have climbed roughly 25% in the last two weeks.
“This large number is likely the result of a combination of the omicron variant and holiday events,” UDOH said in a statement.
“These cases affect all Utah residents. We need the help of all Utahns to minimize the disruptions of this virus in our communities. If you feel sick, stay home, and get tested. If you attend a large indoor gathering, we recommend wearing a mask to protect you and those around you.”
Summit County set new records this week with 137 new cases recorded on Monday, and 136 on Tuesday. The previous single-day record was 95 cases reported on Christmas day.
According to the Summit County Health Department, 85% of eligible county residents are fully vaccinated. Case rates show a stark difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
