At least 3 people were transported to area hospitals in critical condition, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. At least 10 people in total were transported with injuries.

Five of the eight fatalities in the crash were all riding in one vehicle.

Just around 4:30 p.m. on Interstate 15 near milepost 152, high winds caused a dust storm that impaired the visibility of drivers.

“We’re stunned and saddened by the horrific accidents in Millard County,” said Gov. Spencer Cox. “We fervently pray for the loved ones of those who perished and for those fighting for their lives.”

If you’re caught driving in an intense sandstorm, the U.S. Travel Insurance Association recommends slowing down and pulling over to the side of the road. They recommend not stopping on the road because cars behind you may not see you.

If you are unable to pull over, stay focused on the white lines on the pavement to keep your direction on line.
