Fans gather in Utah to support Britney Spears

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. — Dozens of demonstrators gathered in Salt Lake City on Wednesday to support Britney Spears during a court battle over her conservatorship.

As part of a nationwide protest over the treatment of Spears who lost the right to manage her estate in 2008, more than 50 people came to the Utah Capitol grounds to support Britney.

Britney Spears wants to be released from her father, Jamie Spears’ oversight, who controls the singer’s assets. At a hearing on Wednesday, she broke down in tears after describing the “cruelty” of her situation. A California judge allowed her to hire an attorney of her choosing.

Free Britney Utah founder Shannon Egan told the Salt Lake Tribune that she was motivated to support the movement because of discrimination she experienced in her own life. “Here in Utah, women are suppressed,” she said. “I want to empower women.”

Protesters held signs on the Utah Capitol steps that read “Stop Silencing Women,” “End the Toxic Conservatorship,” and “Free Britney.”
