Large rockfall indefinitely closes key route through Zion National Park

ZION NATIONAL PARK — The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway remains closed from Canyon Junction to the East Entrance after a large rockfall Wednesday, Sept. 30.
The closure means travelers who want to drive between Zion National Park’s south and east entrances will need to take an alternate route.
In an update Friday afternoon, the Utah Department of Transportation said crews are facing challenges removing the large boulders from the roadway. There is currently no estimated reopening time.
UDOT said the park is working closely with its specialists to evaluate road conditions and determine necessary repairs. Officials will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
Zion Canyon Scenic Drive remains open to shuttles and lodge guests.
