Police Log: Moose chase, injured horse rescue, and another busy weekend at Bonanza Flat

A cow moose and calf were reportedly chased on the Rail Trail by a bull moose in the middle of the rut, while Search and Rescue teams responded to two separate horse-related incidents and Bonanza Flat saw another weekend of heavy traffic and parking problems.

Summit County deputies also responded to a stolen vehicle-related DUI and a multi-semi crash on I-80.

Monday, Sept. 28

Incident: Wildlife problem
A caller reported an “extremely dangerous situation” involving a cow moose and calf being pursued by a bull moose near the Rail Trail on Wyatt Earp Way.

Incident: Trespassing
A man was reportedly found sleeping in a garage at Shadow Ridge Resort when an employee arrived for work.

Incident: Citizen assist
A caller on reported seeing people who appeared to have entered his apartment unit even though no work was supposed to be taking place there.

Tuesday, Sept. 29

Incident: DUI
Deputies located a vehicle that had been reported in an “attempt to locate” near mile marker 146 on eastbound I-80. After observing multiple moving violations, deputies stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver after observing signs of impairment. A dog inside the vehicle was taken by animal control, and the vehicle was impounded by the state.

Wednesday, Sept. 30

Incident: Disturbing the peace
A caller reported construction near the bottom of Main Street involving a jackhammer early in the morning.

Incident: UAS deployment
Officers assisted in trying to locate a homeless camp observed on the hillside off Meadows Drive from the Aspen Springs area.

Incident: Citizen assist
A caller reported that a white truck clipped his vehicle while attempting to merge near Kearns Boulevard and Bonanza Drive. The caller was no longer at the scene.

Incident: Road rage
A caller reported a possible road rage incident after another driver began yelling and honking at him as he pulled onto Park Avenue. The other vehicle was no longer following him.

Incident: Trespassing
A caller reported ongoing vandalism on property on Lowell Avenue, including broken door handles. Evidence was also found of someone apparently living in the parking garage.

Incident: Suspicious activity
A person housesitting reported that a man came to the door and said he was soliciting for a type of spray.

Incident: Citizen assist
A caller reported a door-to-door salesperson approaching people on the street.

Incident: Vagrancy
A man was reported camping in the doorway of a stairwell leading to a parking lot on 7th Street.

Thursday, Oct. 1

Incident: Multi-vehicle crash
Deputies assisted the Utah Highway Patrol with a crash involving three semi-trucks and a passenger vehicle near mile marker 176 on I-80. Westbound I-80 was closed, with traffic diverted onto Echo Canyon Road while deputies provided traffic control.

Incident: Motorist assist
Officers helped a driver who was lost and had parked in a no-parking area find parking for the Armstrong Trail.

Incident: Criminal mischief
Bathrooms near the Ian Weinman Legacy Dog Park were reported to have been tagged with graffiti.

Incident: Traffic stop
A vehicle was stopped after officers observed a blue Uber light facing outward through the front windshield.

Friday, Oct. 2

Incident: Drugs
Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked behind the Jeremy Store on Rasmussen Road. Drug paraphernalia was visible in plain view, and a subsequent search of the vehicle located additional paraphernalia and fentanyl. The driver and sole occupant was arrested and booked on felony drug charges.

Incident: Juvenile problem
A caller reported teenage boys harassing people walking along Main Street and trying to get people to enter one of the stores. The caller said the boys were being rude and riding e-bikes.

Incident: Parking problem
Cars were reported parked illegally along the roadway at Bonanza Flat, blocking traffic. The caller requested that the vehicles be ticketed or moved.

Incident: Wildlife problem
A resident on Lucky John Drive reported a deer in her backyard that appeared unable to get up.

Saturday, Oct. 3

Incident: Disturbing the peace
A car alarm had reportedly been going off for about two hours, stopping periodically before starting again. The caller was unsure whether anyone was home.

Incident: Citizen assist
Visitors staying at an Airbnb reported that the rental instructions told them to park in the Mountain Base parking lot, but their vehicles were towed overnight. They contacted police for help resolving the issue.

Incident: Traffic stop
Multiple drivers were reportedly stopped after failing to obey a no-left-turn sign near Hillside Drive and Marsac Avenue.

Incident: Traffic hazard
Cars were reported parked along SR 224 near Guardsman Pass, causing traffic issues. Park City parking enforcement was responding to issue tickets, and the caller requested additional law enforcement assistance.

Incident: Citizen assist
A caller reported that he hit a deer the previous night and had parked his vehicle in a nearby parking lot.

Sunday, Oct. 4

Incident: Search and Rescue
Summit County Search and Rescue responded to assist a hiker with an injured horse near the Highline Trail. The subject was located and assisted off the mountain.

Incident: Search and Rescue
Search and Rescue responded to the Henrys Fork Trail after a person’s horses returned to the trailhead without their owner. The subject was located by SAR members in good health.

Incident: Disturbing the peace
A caller reported construction taking place at the Post Office on Park Avenue and questioned whether work was permitted on a Sunday.

Incident: Parking enforcement
Officers conducted a special assignment in the Bonanza Flat area, where traffic was heavy throughout the shift. Officers reported that motorists were not obeying no-parking signs.

Incident: Juvenile problem
Two children were reportedly riding Surron electric bikes recklessly through a local neighborhood.
