Prescribed burns planned along Mirror Lake Highway through November

South Summit residents may see or smell smoke along SR-150 as fire crews conduct planned burns

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — South Summit residents may see or smell smoke along Mirror Lake Highway in the coming weeks as fire crews conduct a series of prescribed burns through November.

Summit County issued a notice Sept. 18 advising residents of planned burns along Mirror Lake Highway, or state Route 150. Smoke may be visible in surrounding communities, the county said, and it asked residents not to report smoke from the burns.

According to the county’s Fire Warden Services page, a prescribed burn began along the highway Friday, with additional burns planned through November.

Land managers commonly use prescribed fire to reduce accumulated vegetation and other fuels that can contribute to more intense wildfires. Along the Mirror Lake Highway corridor, state watershed restoration plans also call for fuels treatments intended to improve options for managing future wildfires and strengthen the highway’s role as a potential fire-control boundary.

Mirror Lake Highway runs east from Kamas through the Uinta Mountains toward the Wyoming border.

The county did not specify dates or locations for each of the upcoming burns. Prescribed fire activity along the corridor is expected to continue through November as conditions allow.
